Our story begins 1861 when Edward Frauenheim arrived from Germany with the original Iron City recipe in hand.

Rapid growth meant a new location, where Iron City opened shop in a four-story brick building at the center of Liberty Ave. & 34th Street.

But the story of Pittsburgh Brewing Company begins in earnest in 1899, when 21 local and regional breweries formed a trust on the strength of Iron City's success.

PBCo. became the largest brewery in Pennsylvania, the third largest in America, and a force known for saving brewers who had fallen on hard times.

By 1933, PBCo. was one of only 725 breweries to emerge from the other side of Prohibition. They survived on ingenuity—making ice cream, soft drinks and 'near beer’ while operating a cold storage business.
